What Happens During Fire Damage Restoration?

fire damage restoration

Fire damage can be devastating, not just physically but emotionally as well. It can be incredibly difficult to see a building go up in flames, and approaching restoration can be even more challenging. With that being said, you need to think about how fire restoration really works, and the way that it can make the building affected by fire damage even stronger than it originally was. While we don’t want to think about fires occurring, they’re more common than you might think. 2019 saw fire departments responding to a fire every 24 seconds on average, according to the National Fire Protection Association. So, understanding that fires can happen to all of us, how does fire damage restoration work?

Approaching Fire Damage Restoration

Obviously, the extent to which fire damage can occur varies wildly from incident to incident. Fire damage restoration is not just the restoration of the structure itself, but also of restoring personal belongings that have sustained damage, albeit smoke-free damage. The site of the fire must first be evaluated before determinations can be made about what can be saved. Not all items or buildings can be restored following fire damage. These evaluations should be made by companies that specialize in fire damage restoration. You need a professional opinion before you move forward with any restoration.

The Process of Fire Damage Restoration

Firstly, fire damage restoration will involve burned structural components like walls, ceilings, and even floor coverings. If charring or warping is discovered within any structures, these structures will be replaced. If they’re salvageable, they will then be treated in order to remove any smoke odor. Afterward, they’ll be dried before being sealed and covered with new drywall and paneling. If the odor is not removed before the salvaged components are put back in place, it will continue to be an issue throughout the home.

Deodorizing will also be done throughout the home, to ensure that the smoke scent does not linger. As each phase of restoration occurs, the house will also be given time to air out. This will not only reduce the smoke scent but ensure that volatile organic compounds don’t build up any further than they already have.

There are a lot of things that you need to consider after your home has sustained fire damage. Don’t give up! You do have options available.
